For March I thought that not only would we showcase the three thematic shelves for the month, but also introduce a new Film of the Month selection. You can be assured that these titles will all have public performance rights and be ready to showcase to your patrons and utilize for movie nights. The idea will be to tie them in to our monthly themes and bring appreciation for things like Women’s History Month off of the internet and into the room for a live audience.
Without further ado:
Women’s History Month:
All through March, we’ll be celebrating Women’s History month with titles featuring women both in front of and behind the camera, led by the BBC mini-series “Becoming Frida Kahlo:”
Becoming Frida Kahlo
Directed by Louise Lockwood and featuring interviews with the biographers Martha Zamora and Hayden Herrera, among others, this three episode mini-series from 2023 reveals an artist driven by politics, power, sex, and identity, centered around her love affair with painter Diego Rivera.
St. Patrick’s Day (3/17):
Our St. Patrick’s Day shelf will go up for the weekend of March 15th and run for several days, highlighting an enriching mix of dramas, comedies, and documentaries. At the head of the shelf will be:
Monster
Ireland’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature Film in 2021, this festival darling is set during 1845’s potato famine and is appropriately intense. Within the desperation and brutality, however, the will to persevere and protect shines through as we follow fisherman Colmán Sharkey and the young girl who he nurses back to health.
Transgender Day of Visibility (3/31):
Similar, our Transgender Day of Visibility shelf will go up for that Saturday March 29th and then run through the end of the month. The German documentary “Instructions for Survival” will be featured:
Instructions for Survival
Released in 2021, this documentary follows Alexander, a trans man living in Georgia (Eastern Europe), as he works to keep his gender identity a secret while working with his wife to flee the country. Winner of the jury award at the Berlin Film Festival, the film continued to resonate in festivals throughout the world.
Film of the Month:
And then, as mentioned, this month I’ll start to highlight a suggested “Film of the Month,” a title with public performance rights that would be worth sharing with your patrons in person. The inaugural title is Peace Piece: The Immersive Poems Of Mandy Kahn:
Peace Piece: The Immersive Poems Of Mandy Kahn
Mandy Kahn is a Los Angeles based writer and artist who builds "immersive poems," a transcendent way to present her message of peace and unity to various communities. This 2019 documentary follows her process around these art installations and the people who experience them.
If it would be useful to your patrons for me to provide some questions and conversation starters around these titles, please do comment below and I’d be happy to include that going forward.
As always, you can expect to see each of these titles, and more, appear right here on the biblio+ homepage
