A warm welcome to all our librarians who may be checking out Community Center for the first time after the launch of our newly revamped marketing toolkit. This monthly newsletter is meant to showcase some of the video titles that we’re featuring as well as provide some of the movie poster assets that can be used with our templates to share with your patrons.

This month we’ll be running a few themed shelves that will remain up for the entirety of August:

Indie Film Showcase:

ida.jpgIda

One of the most decorated indie films in recent memory, this Polish drama from Paweł Pawlikowski won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2015 after wowing audiences on the film festival circuit. Ida follows a young woman on the verge of taking vows as a Catholic nun. Orphaned as an infant during the German occupation of World War II, she must meet her aunt, a former Communist state prosecutor and only surviving relative, who tells her that her parents were Jewish. The two women embark on a road trip into the Polish countryside to learn the fate of their relatives.

Women of International Cinema:

stone drew ripples.jpgThe Stone Drew Ripples

A brand-new 2025 film from Nigerian producer/director Orimz, The Stone Drew Ripples is a coming-of-age film about a middle-class Nigerian family faced with the harsh dilemma of saving the life of their youngest child with chronic illness. Although they get help from an unlikely stranger, this comes with dire consequences.

Music, Study, and Relaxation:

This is our newest type of video, which includes some music mixes meant to put on while you're working or studying (a genre you may be familiar with from Youtube) as well as some more atmospheric nature or scenic videos meant for relaxation or meditation (sometimes called “Slow TV”). These are also great just to put on the TV as ambient background noise to bring some atmosphere to the living room:

One hour of “chillhop” - relaxing music with a steady beat, perfect for keeping focused on the task at hand.

Film of the Month:

And last but not least, our film of the month for August  (with public performance rights secured for in-library screenings) is a comedy from our Indie Film Showcase:

Jon_McConnellOCLC_3-1754093404917.jpegThe Last Right

Featuring Colm Meaney and Brian Cox, The Last Right follows Daniel Murphy after a fateful exchange on a flight from New York to Ireland leaves him in charge of a corpse, the body of someone he never knew. He has to transport the body across nearly the entirety of Ireland, a road trip spanning nearly 600 kilometers.
