SciELO, which is managed by Bireme in Sao Paulo-Brazil, has announced the launching of an interesting project indexing over 300 ebooks from Brazilian academic publishers. Around 253 titles are offered as open access for download in PDF or ePUB while over 3,000 chapters can also be accessed for free. SciELO Books covers areas such as Humanities, Social Sciences, and Public Health.

SciELO is also responsible for indexing and publishing open access e-journals in English, Spanish, and Portuguese which are represented in WorldCat .

eBooks Acadêmicos do Brasil

SciELO, o qual é administrado pela Bireme em São Paulo-Brasil, anunciou o lançamento de um projeto interessante indexando mais de 300 e-books de editoras acadêmicas brasileiras. Ao redor de 253 títulos são oferecidos em acesso aberto para download em PDF ou ePUB enquanto mais de 3.000 capítulos podem também ser acessados gratuitamente. SciELO Books cobre áreas tais como Humanidades, Ciências Sociais, e Saúde Pública.

SciELO é tambem responsável por indexar e publicar periódicos eletrônicos de acesso aberto em inglês, espanhol e português, os quais estão representados no WorldCat .

Information systems, multiculturalism, and social inclusion are the themes for the 24th Brazilian Congress in Librarianship, Documentation, and Information Science (CBBD)  which takes place in the beautiful coastal city of Maceio, northeast of Brazil, on August 7 to 10. Organized by the Brazilian Federation of Librarian Associations, Information Scientists and Institutions (FEBAB) , this biannual event brings this year librarians from throughout the country to discuss about knowledge in the information society, rights to access information, and multiculturalism and cultural identity related to the policies on information.

During the event there is a seminar to celebrate 100 years of librarianship in the country, which was organized by UniRio in collaboration with Febab.

XXIV CBBD no Brasil

Sistemas de informação, multiculturalidade e inclusão social são os temas do XXIV Congresso Brasileiro de Biblioteconomia, Documentação e Ciência da Informação (CBBD)  o qual acontece na bonita cidade costeira de Maceió, nordeste do Brasil, nos dias 7 a 10 de agosto. Organizado pela Federação Brasileira de Associações de Bibliotecários, Cientistas da Informação e Instituições (FEBAB), este evento bi-annual traz este ano bibliotecários de várias partes do país para discutir sobre conhecimento na sociedade da informação, os direitos de acesso à informação e multiculturalidade e identidade cultural relacionadas às políticas da informação.

Durante o evento haverá um seminário para comemorar os 100 anos de biblioteconomia no país, o qual foi organizado pela UniRio em parceria com a Febab.

Biblioteca Mário de Andrade was named after one of the great names in the Brazilian literature, Mário de Andrade, and it is located in the heart of São Paulo- Brazil. The building is surrounded by many gardens and trees, making the place a haven in the middle of the concrete jungle, and a great pit stop for those walking in São Paulo downtown in search of a spot to recharge the body and the soul. This public library was founded in 1925 and offers a variety of materials to its public, but the most requested items are related to the history of São Paulo neighborhoods. Not a surprise for a city over four centuries old.

I had the opportunity to visit all the beautiful rooms furnished with centennial tables and chairs, the gardens, and I could have a nice view of the city from the terrace.

In order to promote the many other items the library holds, Biblioteca Mário de Andrade has launched a very interesting reading campaign which made me think it had some inspirations from the Geek the Library campaign we started here at OCLC. Instead of focusing on the titles, the library decided to focus on the prospect reader’s desires.

If the reader plans to hit the road during vacation, then the library offers some reading options for the topic.

If the reader prefers to spend the vacation watching movies, the library also has options for this.

But if the reader simply plans to fall in love, there are reading options for this too.

These creative and cute cards (there are many more) became folded brochures that were distributed to the library visitors, and this campaign has increased the number of borrowed items considerably. Well done!

February is the month of carnival celebrations in Brazil and other parts of the globe. Located in the heart of Rio downtown, Centro de Memória do Carnaval (Carnival Historical Society) is the site for over 20 thousand items related to the history of carnival in Brazil and the world. The project is result of the League of Independent Samba Schools’ (LIESA ) dream of retrieving and preserving the memory of this celebration which is part of the culture of Brazil and other countries, and is likening to the culture of Rio de Janeiro itself. The carnival parade is an open-air opera with the acts divided and displayed in an explosion of colors and contagious sounds to tell stories in a magic way. Gathering materials related to these festivities and making them available to the present and future generations is precious.

LIESA is going further and plans to establish the Institute of Carnival where students will learn the crafts of the industry of carnival. Centro de Memória do Carnaval will be used as their primary library for research and studies. For those interested in learning more about LIESA, WorldCat.org has results about them as well.

Fevereiro é o mês das celebrações de carnaval no Brasil e em outras partes do globo. Localizado no coração do centro do Rio, Centro de Memória do Carnaval  é o local para mais de 20 mil ítens relacionados à história do carnaval no Brasil e no mundo. O projeto é resultado do sonho da Liga Independente de Escolas de Samba de recuperar e preservar a memória desta celebração que é parte da cultura do Brasil e de outros países e, está ligada à cultura do Rio de Janeiro. O desfile de carnaval é uma ópera ao ar livre com os atos divididos e apresentados em uma explosão de cores e sons contagiantes para contar estórias de um jeito mágico. Coletar materiais relacionados a estas festividades e torná-los disponíveis às gerações atuais e futuras é precioso.

LIESA está indo além e planeja estabelecer o Instituto de Carnaval onde os alunos aprenderão sobre as tarefas da indústria do carnaval. O Centro de Memória do Carnaval será usado como a biblioteca principal para pesquisas e estudos. Febrero es el mes de las celebraciones de carnaval en Brasil e en otras partes del globo. Ubicado en el corazón del centro de Rio, Centro de Memoria del Carnaval  es el lugar para más de 20 mil ítems referentes a la historia del carnaval en Brasil y el mundo. El proyecto es resultado del sueño de la Liga Independiente de Escuelas de Samba (LIESA) de recuperar y preservar la memoria de esta celebración que es parte de la cultura de Brasil y de otros países, y es ligada a la cultura de Rio de Janeiro. El desfile de carnaval es una ópera al aire libre con los actos divididos y presentados en una explosión de colores y sonidos contagiosos para contar historias de una manera mágica. Reunir materiales referentes a estas festividades y los hacer disponibles para las generaciones actuales y futuras es precioso.
