Library Meeting in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is the exotic destination in the south hemisphere- land of carnival, beautiful beaches and great food. But the city is also the home for some of the main academic libraries in Brazil and the Brazilian National Library as well, besides of some of the most important corporations in the country. On March 4th I had the opportunity to be a keynote speaker at Redarte event hosted at the historic building of Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio downtown. Redarte is a consortia of 28 libraries headquartered in Rio region. The group is comprised of academic libraries, museums, and cultural centers.

Around 160 librarians from universities, museums, cultural centers, the national library, Petrobras, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Casa Daros, Institute Goethe, and others located in Rio besides of IBICT staff from Brasilia attended the meeting and could hear about the great things we are doing with WorldCat and how they can be part of this. More than hear about OCLC, the librarians actively participated in the discussions which ranged from where they currently are to where they want to be in order to deliver the best to their end users. This was an exciting venue indeed!

Library Events in Brazil

The Brazilian library community is getting ready for two great events to be held in two different regions of the country. The 17th SNBU (National Seminar of Academic Libraries) is taking place in the bucolic tourist town of Gramado, which is located in the mountains of the south part of Brazil, from September 16 to 21 with the theme The Academic Library as Laboratory in the Information Society. The bi-annual event is being organized by Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul this year. Lynn Connaway , my colleague from the Office of Research, is one of the speakers at the SNBU event. Lynn will present on the Seeking Synchronicity Report, which brings great insights on virtual reference service. My colleagues and I will be hosting an OCLC Meeting with updates on the cooperative and with topics to be discussed with the Brazilian librarians. We will also be at the OCLC booth looking forward to meeting librarians from throughout Brazil.

The 4th Seminar About Information on the Internet, organized by the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology- IBICT - linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, is taking place in Brasilia from November 19 to 21. The discussions will navigate through bandwidth in Brazil, e-books, privacy, among others. I will be speaking at the event about teenagers and young adult information seekers, based on the OCLC Membership Reports. I’m thrilled to meet the event attendees during my stay in Brasilia. See you there!

According to Wikipedia, “malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals caused by eukaryotic protists of the genus plasmodium.” The US National Library of Medicine has stated that there are between 300 to 500 million of cases of malaria each year and that the disease is responsible for more than 1 million deaths. This is so alarming that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is analyzing the global trends through its Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The more concerning issue is that malaria is a disease of warmer climates, striking mostly poor countries. Also, the disease can be transmitted by the infected mother to her unborn child or by blood transfusions, increasing the risks of infection. Many of the affected countries don't have the resources to deal with the problem. Brazil is a tropical country that dealt with high number of cases of malaria in the past, and thanks to physicians such as Carlos Chagas and Oswaldo Cruz the country was then able to start engaging in medical research and testing practices in order to fight the outbreaks.

The good news is that several articles published by Brazilian researchers on their ongoing study of this disease and other tropical diseases are freely available on WorldCat.org for users around the globe. For example, when searching for the term “malaria scielo” (Scielo is the medical database managed by the Brazilian Library of Medicine-BIREME), one can find at least 463 downloadable full-text articles . Searching for the term “malaria” gets you 3,523 downloadable full-text articles . This is precious information at the tip of your fingers from a country that has faced, battled, and controlled the disease. This is the beauty of a global bibliographic catalog called WorldCat.

Malaria, Brasil y WorldCat

Brazilian Public Library Reading Campaign

Biblioteca Mário de Andrade was named after one of the great names in the Brazilian literature, Mário de Andrade, and it is located in the heart of São Paulo- Brazil. The building is surrounded by many gardens and trees, making the place a haven in the middle of the concrete jungle, and a great pit stop for those walking in São Paulo downtown in search of a spot to recharge the body and the soul. This public library was founded in 1925 and offers a variety of materials to its public, but the most requested items are related to the history of São Paulo neighborhoods. Not a surprise for a city over four centuries old.

I had the opportunity to visit all the beautiful rooms furnished with centennial tables and chairs, the gardens, and I could have a nice view of the city from the terrace.

In order to promote the many other items the library holds, Biblioteca Mário de Andrade has launched a very interesting reading campaign which made me think it had some inspirations from the Geek the Library campaign we started here at OCLC. Instead of focusing on the titles, the library decided to focus on the prospect reader’s desires.

If the reader plans to hit the road during vacation, then the library offers some reading options for the topic.

If the reader prefers to spend the vacation watching movies, the library also has options for this.

But if the reader simply plans to fall in love, there are reading options for this too.

These creative and cute cards (there are many more) became folded brochures that were distributed to the library visitors, and this campaign has increased the number of borrowed items considerably. Well done!
