Clean Energy Library in Chile

Our member DIBAM (Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos) has launched the first library in Chile with solar panels. The David Leon Tapia Public Library in the coastal town of Tongoy, south of La Serena and north of Santiago, received 16 panels on its roof which generate 2,200 KWH/hour and covers the library’s daily energy needs. The naturally beautiful Tongoy deserves a library committed to preserving the environment by taking advantage of natural resources to generate energy. In times of several discussions related to how to move towards clean energy solutions, this library is taking the first steps to show to other public libraries and other institutions, not only in Chile but in other regions around the world, that this is possible to be done.

The project was the result of partnership with several institutions led by Agrupación Cultural David León Tapia de Tongoy.

According to DIBAM, the David León Tapia Public Library offers a variety of services to its patrons such as library resources , children area, free internet access, and courses provided by the BiblioRedes project , among others.

Brazilian Public Library Reading Campaign

Biblioteca Mário de Andrade was named after one of the great names in the Brazilian literature, Mário de Andrade, and it is located in the heart of São Paulo- Brazil. The building is surrounded by many gardens and trees, making the place a haven in the middle of the concrete jungle, and a great pit stop for those walking in São Paulo downtown in search of a spot to recharge the body and the soul. This public library was founded in 1925 and offers a variety of materials to its public, but the most requested items are related to the history of São Paulo neighborhoods. Not a surprise for a city over four centuries old.

I had the opportunity to visit all the beautiful rooms furnished with centennial tables and chairs, the gardens, and I could have a nice view of the city from the terrace.

In order to promote the many other items the library holds, Biblioteca Mário de Andrade has launched a very interesting reading campaign which made me think it had some inspirations from the Geek the Library campaign we started here at OCLC. Instead of focusing on the titles, the library decided to focus on the prospect reader’s desires.

If the reader plans to hit the road during vacation, then the library offers some reading options for the topic.

If the reader prefers to spend the vacation watching movies, the library also has options for this.

But if the reader simply plans to fall in love, there are reading options for this too.

These creative and cute cards (there are many more) became folded brochures that were distributed to the library visitors, and this campaign has increased the number of borrowed items considerably. Well done!

Ask a librarian in Chile

The National Library of Chile  is celebrating its 197th anniversary today, August 19, and besides of celebrating the date with festivities the library has also announced its new virtual reference service - Bibliotecario en línea. The OCLC cooperative virtual reference service QuestionPoint  is the platform for Bibliotecario en línea which is extended to other areas of Dibam (Dirección de Bibliotecas, Archivos y Museos) such as the museums and BiblioRedes.

It’s important to mention that after the earthquake and aftershocks that hit the country this year, Dibam libraries played a crucial role in helping the population to locate and communicate with their loved ones. Now with the Bibliotecario en línea service, these librarians will have other tools to reach out to their users and vice-versa.
