WebJunction is the online community for library staff where librarians can access online courses, get information on library management practices, and participate in groups. Memory of the World is a program created and managed by UNESCO with the purpose of recognizing valuable holdings worldwide that translate into relevant documentary heritage both locally and globally. The main idea of this project is to facilitate the preservation , safeguard, and dissemination of these materials in order to help preventing that the history of the world is lost. Brazil launched officially its National Committee of the Memory of the World Program in 2007 and has already 20 nominated collections where at least six of them are also nominated by the Regional Committee for the Latin America and the Caribbean of the Memory of the World (MOWLAC). An example is the Carlos Chargas Archive, under Fundação Oswaldo Cruz' custody, which is part of both Brazil and LAC Memory of the World. Carlos Chagas was a physician and pathology researcher whose works provided practices that helped the world to deal with infectious diseases such as malaria outbreaks.

Assessing how people dealt with several issues in the past helps us to figure out how to deal with current problems. Practices that were successful for some cultures might fit to current or future generations. Unfortunately things such as wars and natural disasters, among others, jeopardize the safety of important documents. The Memory of the World Program is an effort to ensure that this information continues available in the future.

The Brazilian National Committee is inviting organizations or people with invaluable documents or groups of documents related to the Brazilian culture and history under their custody to register for the nomination process according to the guidelines stipulated on the 2009 Call for Nominations Announcement . The Brazilian National Archives  is coordinating the registrations for the nomination, and the deadline is June 30.

I had the opportunity to sit next to the renowned Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges (well, at least next to his picture) while visiting the Buenos Aires Book Fair recently. By the way, the fair was very interesting with a variety of publishers from around the globe and I spent some good time at the children and juvenile areas. Those areas were very appealing with the explosion of colors and comics characters and Anime combined with the interactive activities. The theme "think with books" gathered panelists from various parts of the world to present their views on the subject. I also held a good meeting with some Argentinean librarians to discuss topics of interest and learn better the issues they face on their daily routine. Their main challenge is to provide information at point of need mainly now when users want to access information remotely. I could show them how OCLC through WorldCat can help libraries in this situation, and we discussed over how to make use of some creative ways to attract users to the libraries collections.
Speaking of creativity to attract users to the library (in person or remotely), the National Library of Argentina  has announced its 2009 Music Season with a free-admittance program that includes rare musical scores, modern Argentinean music, mixed media, classic music, and of course the Orchestra of the School of Tango Emilio Balcarce. The event runs until December at the Jorge Luis Borges Auditorium.

Tive a oportunidade de sentar ao lado do famoso escritor argentino Jorge Luis Borges  (bem, pelo menos ao lado de sua foto) ao visitar recentemente a Feira do Livro de Buenos Aires. A propósito, a feira estava muito interessante com uma variedade de editores de vária partes do globo e eu passei um bom tempo nas áreas infantil e juvenil. Essas áreas estavam muito atraentes com a explosão de cores e personagens de gibi e Anime combinado com as atividades interativas. O tema "pensar com livros" reuniu painelistas de várias partes do mundo para apresentar suas visões sobre o assunto.Eu também tive uma boa reunião com alguns bibliotecários argentinos para discutir temas de interesse e conhecer melhor os problemas que eles encaram em sua rotina diária. Seu desafio principal é o de fornecer informação em ponto de necessidade principalmente agora quando os usuários querem acessar a informação remotamente. Pude lhes mostrar como a OCLC através do WorldCat pode ajudar bibliotecas nesta situação e, nós conversamos sobre como utilizar algumas maneiras criativas para atrair os usuários às coleções de bibliotecas. Falando de criatividade para atrair usuários à biblioteca (pessoalmente ou remoto), a Biblioteca Nacional da Argentina anunciou sua Temporada de Música 2009 com um programa de entrada livre que inclui partituras raras, música argentina moderna, meios de comunicação misturados, música clássica e, naturalmente a Orquestra da Escola de Tango Emilio Balcarce. O evento vai até dezembro no Auditório Jorge Luis Borges.

Tuve la oportunidad de sentarme al lado del renombrado escritor argentino Jorge Luis Borges (bien, por lo menos junto a su foto) al visitar la Feria del libro de Buenos Aires recientemente. A propósito, la feria estaba muy interesante con una variedad de editores de alrededor del globo y yo pasé un bueno tiempo en las áreas juvenil y para niños. Esas áreas estaban muy atractivas con la explosión de colores y personajes superhéroes de revista juvenil y Anime combinado con las actividades interactivas. El tema "pensar con libros" reunió panelistas de varias partes del mundo para presentar sus visiones en el asunto. Yo también tuve una buena reunión con algunos bibliotecarios argentinos para discutir temas de interés y aprender mejor acerca de los problemas que ellos encaran en su rutina diaria. Su principal desafío es de proporcionar información en punto de necesidad principalmente ahora cuándo usuarios quieren acceder a información remotamente. Yo pudo mostrar cómo OCLC a través de WorldCat puede ayudar las bibliotecas en esta situación y, nosotros hablamos de cómo utilizar algunas formas creativas de atraer a usuarios a las colecciones de bibliotecas. Hablando de la creatividad para atraer a usuarios a la biblioteca (en persona o remotamente), la Biblioteca Nacional de Argentina ha anunciado su Temporada de Música 2009 con un programa de entrada libre que incluye partituras raras, música argentina moderna, medios mezclados, música clásica, y por supuesto la Orquesta de la Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce.
