The Library of Brazilian Senate (Biblioteca do Senado Federal) has joined OCLC as a member of the cooperative. The library has a collection of around 390 thousand items in the format of books, brochures, newspapers, journals and maps, besides of audio visual materials in the areas of Social Science and Law, and publications by the Brazilian Senate. The collection is also comprised of approximately six thousand rare books for the areas of Law, Politics, Literature, History, and Geography. Everything will now be cataloged into WorldCat.

Biblioteca Senado Federal has also joined the OCLC cooperative virtual reference service - QuestionPoint - and will use the Portuguese interface of the service.

La Biblioteca del Senado Brasileño(Biblioteca do Senado Federal) ha unido a OCLC como miembro de la cooperativa. La biblioteca posee una colección de alrededor de 390 mil ítems en los formatos de libros, folletos, periódicos, revistas y mapas, además de materiales de audio visual en las áreas de Ciencias Sociales y Derecho, y publicaciones del Senado Brasileño. La colección es también compuesta de aproximadamente seis mil libros raros para las áreas de Derecho, Política, Literatura, Historia y Geografía. Ahora todo va a ser catalogado en WorldCat.

Universidad de San Andrés Library - Biblioteca Max von Buch  - in Argentina has been an OCLC cataloging member for almost a decade. The library participated in a cataloging event in Buenos Aires in November where they shared their experience in cooperative cataloging. I interviewed Estela Chahbenderian, the Head of the Cataloging Services at the library, to find out what Estela has to say about the event.

1) What was the name of the event?

2nd National Catalogers Meeting, November 25, 26 and 27, 2009; organized by the National Library of Argentina.

2) Who did represent the Universidad San Andrés in the Meeting?

Estela Chahbenderian and Liliana Miguez.

3) Which was the main theme of your presentation?

Cooperative cataloging in the Universidad de San Andrés Library: the experience with OCLC and NACO.

4) How many people did participate in the Meeting?

Approximately 180 people.

5) How would you summarize your presentation in one paragraph?

It was presented the experience of the Max von Buch Library (University of San Andrés) in cooperative cataloging of bibliographic records and authorities. We presented details of the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) bibliographic service used for the cooperative work and its product WorldCat. We exposed the procedures to perform copy and original cataloging of bibliographic records in the international catalog and the possibility of modifying or correcting already existing records. In the case of the work of authorities, we presented the international cooperative program NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Program) of the Library of Congress, and its covenant with the Library. We detailed in what the cooperative cataloging of authorities consists with examples of copied, original and modified records.

6) Which other institutions did participate in the Meeting?

The majority of the institutions were libraries of the National Universities from the different provinces: Universidad Nacional de la Plata, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Universidad Nacional del Rosario, Universidad de Mar del Plata, Universidad Nacional del Litoral, etc.; the Universidad Católica de Córdoba, Universidad Argentina de la Empresa and Biblioteca Nacional de Maestros, and the National Library as well.

7) Which was the main purpose of the Meeting?

The subtitle of the Meeting gives an idea: The Cooperation and the Norms for the Organization and Information Processing in the Argentinean Libraries.

Estela and Liliana concluded their presentation saying:

"The new information technologies facilitate each time more the exchange of records; the great step consists of the agreement in the group of standards, to assume the pragmatic spirit that implies all cooperation and to face the challenge of resolving the tension between the private interests of each library and the library community in general."

I had the pleasure to attend the 29th Santiago International Book Fair recently where I participated in the 14th International Conference in Librarianship organized by the Chilean Library Association. The site for the event is the bucolic and historic Estacion Mapocho located in the heart of Santiago. Since Argentina was the guest of honor, the entrance was decorated with the statues of Evita, the writer Jorge Luis Borges, and the singer Carlos Gardel, and tango songs filled the place. The opening of the book fair had the presence of the President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet and the President of Argentina, Cristina Kirchner. The booths displayed names of publishers from Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain, and others.

The library conference started with the Chilean Minister of Culture and the President of the Chilean Library Association speaking to an audience of over 200 librarians and library directors followed by a presentation by the US Library of Congress. I delivered a presentation on the latest OCLC Report: Online Catalogs - what users and librarians want and demoed the power of WorldCat.org in providing access to knowledge to users around the world with the relevant holdings from libraries worldwide. Librarians from Chile, Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina also delivered presentations in order to share their experiences in different aspects which could be applied to any library facing similar challenges. There were several discussions about transparency in information, the importance of creating and managing digital collections, how to better provide access to information, how to promote library collections, and the role of libraries. It was nice to see corporate, national, government, academic, and school libraries together sharing ways of improving their services and discussing their future as information providers. OCLC was one of the main sponsors of the conference.

One thing I have observed during my trips to South America is how the libraries in these countries are coming together to improve their services. More collaboration means more opportunities to find better library practices.

My next task: speak to Venezuelan libraries at the IIICIBIDED Conference .

Conferencia en Chile de Bibliotecología

Tuve el placer de asistir recientemente a 29ª. Feria Internacional del Libro de Santiago donde tomé parte en la XIV Conferencia Internacional de Bibliotecología la cual fue organizada por el Colegio de Bibliotecarios de Chile . El sitio para el evento es la bucólica e histórica Estación Mapocho ubicada en el corazón de Santiago. Cómo Argentina fue el invitado de honor, la entrada fue decorada con las estatuas de Evita, del escritor Jorge Luis Borges, y del cantante Carlos Gardel, y canciones de tango llenaron el lugar. La apertura de la feria del libro tuvo la presencia de la Presidente de Chile, Michelle Bachelet y la Presidente de Argentina, Cristina Kirchner. Los stands llevaban nombres de editores de América Latina y el Caribe, de España, y otros.

La conferencia de biblioteca tuve inicio con la Ministra de la Cultura de Chile y la Presidente del Colegio de Bibliotecarios de Chile que hablaron con una audiencia de más de 200 bibliotecarios y directores de biblioteca seguidos por una presentación de la Library of Congress. Yo hice una presentación acerca del más reciente Informe de OCLC: Los Catálogos en línea - qué quieren los usuarios y los bibliotecarios y demostré el poder de WorldCat.org en proveer acceso al conocimiento a usuarios alrededor del mundo con las colecciones relevantes de bibliotecas en todo el mundo. Los bibliotecarios de Chile, México, Colombia, y Argentina también hicieron ponencias para compartir sus experiencias en aspectos diferentes que podrían ser aplicados a cualquier biblioteca frente a desafíos semejantes. Había varias discusiones acerca de transparencia en la información, la importancia de crear y manejar las colecciones digitales, cuán mejor proporcionar acceso a la información, cómo promover las colecciones de la biblioteca, y el papel de las bibliotecas. Fue agradable ver las bibliotecas corporativas, nacionales, de gobierno, académicas, y de escuelas juntas compartiendo maneras de mejorar sus servicios y discutir su futuro como proveedores de información. OCLC fue un de los principales auspiciadores de la conferencia.

Una cosa que he observado durante mis viajes a Sudamérica es cómo las bibliotecas de estos países se reúnen para mejorar sus servicios. Más colaboración significa más oportunidades de encontrar mejores prácticas bibliotecarias.

Conferência no Chile de Bibliotecologia

Tive o prazer de participar recentemente da 29ª. Feira Internacional do Livro de Santiago onde eu participei na XIV Conferência Internacional de Bibliotecologia que foi organizada pelo Colegio de Bibliotecarios de Chile . O local para o evento é a bucólica e histórica Estación Mapocho localizada no coração de Santiago. Como a Argentina foi o convidado de honra, a entrada foi decorada com as estátuas de Evita, o escritor Jorge Luis Borges, e o cantor Carlos Gardel, e canções de tango encheram o lugar. A abertura da feira de livro teve a presença da Presidente do Chile, Michelle Bachelet e a Presidente da Argentina, Cristina Kirchner. Os estandes exibiram nomes de editores da América Latina e Caribe, Espanha, e outros.

A conferência de biblioteca começou com a Ministra da Cultura do Chile e a Presidente do Colegio de Bibliotecarios de Chile falando para um público de mais de 200 bibliotecários e diretores de biblioteca seguido pela apresentação da Library of Congress. Eu fiz uma apresentação sobre o mais recente Relatório da OCLC: Catálogos on-line - que querem os usuários e bibliotecários e demonstrei o poder de WorldCat.org em fornecer acesso ao conhecimento a usuários ao redor do mundo com as coleções relevantes de bibliotecas de todo mundo. Os bibliotecários do Chile, México, Colômbia, e Argentina também fizeram apresentações para compartilhar suas experiências em aspectos diferentes que podem ser aplicados a qualquer biblioteca enfrentando desafios semelhantes. Haviam várias discussões sobre transparência na informação, a importância de criar e administrar coleções digitais, como melhor fornecer acesso à informação, como promover coleções de biblioteca, e o papel de bibliotecas. Foi bom ver bibliotecas corporativas, nacionais, de governo, acadêmicas, e de escolas juntas compartilhando maneiras de melhorar seus serviços e discutir seu futuro como provedores de informação. OCLC foi um dos principais patrocinadores da conferência.

Uma coisa que tenho observado durante minhas viagens à América do Sul é como as bibliotecas destes países tem unido-se para melhorar suas bibliotecas. Mais colaboração significa mais oportunidades de encontrar melhores práticas bibliotecárias.

Patricia Lillo, Head of the Sub Department of Information Analysis and Bibliographic Standards at the National Library of Chile, has shared with me the project she has been working on with her team and in collaboration with the Library of Congress regarding to RDA (Resource Description and Access). The experience the National Library of Chile is having with the new rules (which are scheduled to be published this year) is being translated into materials in format of PPT presentations and PDF documents in Spanish to be shared online with the Spanish speaking library community at http://biblioestandares.bn.cl. As the library community gets ready for RDA, it is very nice to see what a library is experiencing when putting the rules into practice. Particularly, for the Latin American libraries, this is a good chance to observe how the local content will fit into the new rules.

This is the message Patricia has related to this project at the National Library of Chile:

Resource Description and Access (RDA). As they bring an important conceptual change, following the FRBR model, I organized a meeting at the National Library (Sala América, May 27) to share with the library community what we have learned until now in my department. We have some PPT slides and examples from our records to illustrate better the new concepts. We have been working on our web page as well (where we have the MARC Bibliographic Formats translated into Spanish), where we have uploaded some of the several existents documents about FRBR and where we will place our PPT presentations later.

Patricia Lillo, Chefe do Sub-departamento de Análise da Informação e Padrões Bibliográficos na Biblioteca Nacional do Chile, compartilhou comigo o projeto no qual ela vem trabalhando junto com sua equipe e em colaboração com a Library of Congress referente ao RDA (Resource Description and Access). A experiência que a Biblioteca Nacional do Chile está tendo com as novas regras (as quais estão marcadas para serem publicadas este ano) está sendo transformado em documentos em formato de apresentações PowerPoint e documentos em PDF em espanhol para serem compartilhados on line com a comunidade bibliotecária de lingua espanhola em http://biblioestandares.bn.cl. Enquanto a comunidade bibliotecária se prepara para RDA, é muito bom ver o que uma biblioteca está experimentando quando colocando as regras em prática. Particularmente, para as bibliotecas da América Latina, esta é uma boa chance para observar como o conteúdo local vai caber dentro das novas regras.

La experiencia que la Biblioteca Nacional de Chile sigue teniendo con las nuevas reglas (las cuales están marcadas para ser publicadas este año) esta siendo transformado en documentos en formato de transparencias PowerPoint y documentos en PDF en español a ser compartidos en línea con la comunidad bibliotecaria de lengua española en http://biblioestandares.bn.cl. Mientras la comunidad bibliotecaria preparase para RDA, es muy bueno ver lo que una biblioteca esta experimentando cuando poñe en práctica las reglas. Particularmente, para las bibliotecas de América Latina, esta es una buena chance para observar como el contenido local va caber en las nuevas reglas.
