Elisangela Alves Silva and Janete S.B. Estevão are the two Brazilian librarians who participated in the IFLA/OCLC Early Career Development Fellowship Program, and on July 6, they shared their experience in the program during the event XXIII CBBD in Bonito- MS- Brazil. With the presentation "Weaving the experience as Fellows of the program IFLA/OCLC in 2006 and 2007 - report of experience", Elisangela and Janete could share what they learned and observed during the period they participated in the program. The pics of their presentation can be accessed here .

See below what both Janete and Elisangela have to say about their presentation:

Our presentation took place at 5:20pm and it was appreciated by around 40 people. There were some questions about how to participate in the program of professional exchange, if there are age limitations, etc. The presentation was a report about the program of professional exchange carried out in the period of April to May of 2006 and 2007, respectively, with visits to the US, the Netherlands and Germany libraries and institutions as part of the program sponsored by IFLA - International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, OCLC - Online Computer Library Center and ATLA - American Theological Library Association. It was characterized as an opportunity to learn about initiatives of global and regional cooperation, resource sharing, processes and services developed by professionals of information, besides of the new professional development networks.

In search of professional development, in the periods of April to May of 2006 and 2007, respectively, with others four colleagues from countries with developing economies, under the supervision of the teams of the institutions mentioned, we visited libraries, archives, museums and diverse natures of documentation centers in the United States, and in 2007 some institutions from the Netherlands and Germany were added to the program where, between others aspects, it was possible to note the intense network activities of these institutions. There are networks of rural libraries, corporate libraries, which may occasionally compete between themselves, but share information and technical procedures. The program is a milestone in the life of the participants, for the training in group, the visits to the diversified proposed institutions, and especially, for the cultures and plural realities experienced.

The cooperative work showed us possibilities and new opportunities to improve the library routine not only with invaluable technological devices, but mainly with attitudes and will to make the difference in our communities. It also provided the perception in the collective scope of our position, the resource and information sharing between the colleagues, the libraries and the organizations related to our profession, besides of the dissemination of the idea that we need to be united to be strong which will provide more visibility and recognition of our work before the users, our institutions and the society.
